Sagger fired

A Sagger firing is an ancient process that encloses a piece of ceramics in a closed space in the kiln such as a clay refractory box that excludes the air and protects the ceramics.

Today you can have the same effect by wrapping ceramics in newspaper, refactory clay,or kitchen foil and packing items such as seaweed, horsehair, banana skins etc.

The results are random and subtle in colourisation that characterises the process.
