South Africa

A glimpse of Africa

While studying  ceramics at UCLAN   I had the opportunity to go and study in  South Africa at the Vaal Triangle Technikon a truly memorable experience. As a consequence of my study I decided to “return” and spent a year or so touring the wonderful country. Visits included working at the International Ardmore Studios in Kwazulu Natal and then at the Xun and Khwe community at Platsfontein near Kimberley. I finally settled in St Francis Bay where I lived for a number of years  in the Eastern Cape. My work at that time was influenced by the  natural world and the San peoples I had met.

I was asked by the Kouga local authority to help  set up and run various craft programmes in the local townships, providing a new skills base in a variety of disciplines and at the same time a valuable income .The Eastern Cape is one of the poorest areas of South Africa.

Below are pictures of some of the programmes.
